Lennon's Ltd

Image
The Lennon building in Marsh Street was built in 1868 for the chemist E Powrie.  Later Lennon's ran a pharmacy and photographic store from here. The verandah was not only to protect pedestrians from rain but also to protect the goods on display from the sun

St Peter's Anglican Church

Image
Yersterday was a beautiful sunny day in Mossel Bay.  I was on my way to the post office in lunch but had enough time to take a picture of this lovely old Anglican Church in Marsh Street. The ground to built this church was donated by Mr J Hudson.  The nave was built in 1878 and 1879 by Weymouth and Anglican stone masons from Cornwall.  The tower and chancel were added in 1906.

Cape St Blaze Cave

Image
The Cape St Blaze Cave is the site of one of South Africa's oldest archaeological excavations.  It was first excavated in 1888 by George Leith and many others after him.  The Cave has middens from the San or Khoekhoen people from about 200 000 years ago to the pre-colonial age (1488) The Cape St. Blaize Cave is always open to visitors. Signs on site provide general information about the archaeology.

St Blaze Terrace

Image
This beautiful building is the St Blaze Terrace.  It was built in 1909 and renovated in 1986.  Rumour is that is was built from "left over" stones from the school.

Old Point High School

Image
Keating & Co built this school in 1909.  The stones were quarried in the hills and transported with cocopans on the rails to the school.  Different stones were used: dark pink stones contrasts with the sandstone around the windows. In the 1960's the number of learners at the school became too much for the building.  In 1974 a new building was started and on 19 March 1976 the school moved to the new premises. The Milkwood Primary School now uses the building.
